Teaching & Learning - Choral and Instrumental Music

The Boys’ Latin Ipso Factos

The Boys’ Latin Ipso Factos, the Upper School Chorus at the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland, is made up of students from grades nine through twelve. The original Boys’ Latin Ipso Factos  a cappella group sang barbershop under the direction of Mr. C. Brett Boocock during the ’66-’67 school year. The Boys’ Latin Ipso Factos, the current BL chorus, perform under the direction of Mrs. Kathy Anderson at a variety of school and community functions which include a winter and spring concert at Boys’ Latin. Their repertoire includes a variety of choral music from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern eras as well as choral music that is arranged from pop, jazz, rock and roll, show tunes, gospel, and rhythm and blues.

Instrumental Music

The Upper School offers a modern and diverse instrumental music program. The US Rock Ensembles and Jazz Band perform a range of pieces appropriate to the technical capabilities of the students, which exposes them to a variety of styles and challenges.  Students are taught basic scales, chord progressions, and music theory to advance their individual performance, technique, and improvisation.  All groups perform undhe direction of Mr. Clark Nyman; the groups perform at several concerts each year and at the Commencement Ceremonies, and have opportunities to tour, be recorded, and play at several school events.
Private instrumental lessons are offered on campus to those students interested in Guitar, Bass, Drums, Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, Clarinet, and Piano.  Boys' Latin brings in outside private teachers to supply lessons before, during, and after the school day.  Lessons run $25 per half hour.
