Tuition and Financial Aid

Due in large part to the generosity of parents, alumni, and friends, The Boys' Latin School of Maryland is able to maintain both a competitive level of tuition and an intimate learning environment.  The School maintains a student-faculty ratio of 7-1 and an average class size of 14. Tuition at all levels includes the cost of books.

Financial Aid
Boys’ Latin is committed to being a diverse and inclusive community reflecting a broad economic mix.  In 2015-16, the School awarded approximately $3.5 million in financial aid to over 250 deserving students.  Were it not for the generous support of our donors, these talented students would not have access to a Boys’ Latin education.  Moreover, our community would not be enriched by their presence.

Boys’ Latin’s Financial Aid Policy is administered by the Financial Aid Committee and is consistent with the guidelines established by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS).  The basic premise of these guidelines is that parents have an obligation to finance their son’s education to the extent that they are able.  Financial aid awards are based on each family’s demonstrated financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Committee.

How to Apply
Families begin the financial aid process by notifying the Admissions Office that they are interested in applying for financial aid.  New families do this by simply checking the box on the admissions application indicating that they are interested in receiving information about financial aid.  Current Boys’ Latin families already receiving financial aid will automatically receive a financial aid packet and do not need to contact the Admissions Office.  Current families not receiving financial aid should contact the Admissions Office directly to request a financial aid packet.

The financial aid packet provides detailed instructions regarding the financial aid process at Boys’ Latin.  Note that the financial information requested and the due dates differ slightly for new and current students.  Click below to see the appropriate financial aid checklist.

Applying for financial aid will not affect an applicant's chances for admission.  Admissions decisions and financial aid decisions are rendered by separate committees of the school.  All materials submitted for financial aid are kept strictly confidential.

Named Scholarship Program
Each year a number of Upper School students have the honor of being selected to be Named Scholars.  Named Scholars receive financial support from funds established by or in the name of long-time supporters and friends of Boys’ Latin.  Most of the 60 Named Scholars are recipients of need-based financial aid.  Some receive merit awards.  All Named Scholars must apply for financial aid through the normal process.

Financial Aid FAQs
Q.  How are financial aid grants determined?
A.  Grants are awarded based on demonstrated financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Committee.  The committee makes this determination after reviewing and analyzing the PFS and other financial information submitted by the family.

Q.  If we completed a PFS last year, must we complete another one this year?
A.  Yes, families must submit a new PFS every year in order to be considered for financial aid.

Q.  If our son is applying to more than one school, do we need to complete a PFS for each institution?
A.  No, completing one PFS will suffice, as long as all of the schools your son is applying to use SSS as their financial aid service provider.  Please note that you must indicate on the PFS that your son is applying to Boys’ Latin in order for the School to be able to access your financial information through SSS (Boys’ Latin’s School Code Number is 1786).

Q.  Do we need submit an additional PFS for our son if we already submitted a PFS for his sibling?
A.  No, you only need to submit one PFS per household.  Part B of the PFS allows you to list multiple applicants.  If after submitting your PFS you want to add an additional applicant, you can revise your PFS online to include the additional applicant.  Please note that you may also need to make a change to item #19A in part E regarding the number of children who will be attending tuition charging schools.

Q.  In cases of separation or divorce, does each parent need to file a separate PFS form?
A.  Yes, in cases of separation or divorce both parents must submit a separate PFS and other financial information to SSS.  If either parent has remarried, Boys’ Latin will consider the financial resources of the entire household.

Q.  When will we be notified of the financial aid decision?
A.  The Financial Aid Committee will send written notification of decisions to new applicants to the school on February 19, 2016.  Financial aid awards will be mailed to returning financial aid students on or around April 15, 2016.
